The New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey (NYCHVS), sponsored by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), is required by State and City law.
The questionnaire collects important information, including:
- Unit, building, and neighborhood conditions
- Housing and utility costs
- Information about the people who live in the sampled address
The survey is
- Confidential
- Can be completed anonymously, if you choose
- Conducted approximately every three years
- Available in the language of your choice
For 2026, HPD has partnered with the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan to conduct the survey.
The NYCHVS selects about 15,000 specific addresses randomly throughout New York City to be part of the survey.
You can find more detailed information on HPD's NYCHVS website.
