Some students with medical conditions cannot attend school in-person. This is called Medically Necessary Instruction (also known as Home Instruction). This is for public school students in New York City.
Reasons for confinement include:
- Medical conditions
- Orthopedic conditions
- Serious emotional condition
Services are offered for school-aged children (from 3K to grade 12). They are available in all five boroughs.
Services can include:
- In-person instruction by a certified teacher
- Individual or Group instruction by certified teachers through digital platforms
Any family with a student who is immunocompromised due to the following may apply:
- Medical conditions
- Treatment for orthopedic conditions
- Treatment for a psychiatric conditions
Applications for conditions not listed will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The curriculum will follow the student's most recent program, with changes as needed. The goal is to allow home bound students to continue their education for a short time.
Students who cannot attend school because they fail to meet school immunization requirements are not eligible.
