A type of bird flu (avian influenza), called H5N1, has been detected in birds in New York City.

People exposed to sick or dead birds with H5N1 are asked to call the NYC Health Department if they develop flu-like symptoms.

There have been no human cases of bird flu in New York. The current risk to New Yorkers remains low. People who work with animals may be at higher risk of exposure to bird flu. No human-to-human transmission of H5N1 has been detected to date.

The NYC Health Department recommends New Yorkers report groups of sick or dead birds or animals through NYC311. Avoid contact with birds that look sick or have died and surfaces that have bird feces. Do not consume raw milk or raw milk products. Continue safe food handling practices at home to reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses.
